What is unique to your role at The Friends of Israel?
I have worked in a small church rural ministry for 20 years, in Canada's beautiful Maritime provinces. We have a long and storied history here. I believe that has flavored my ministry, and is something I bring along with me to Friends of Israel. The smaller churches, the smaller groups of Jewish believers, with often long distances between them. These are the ones I seek to minister to, along with those in our larger urban centres.
What inspires you most to do what you do for FOI?
I am inspired most by Mark 16:15, the Great Commission, in which Jesus tells us to go into all three works, and to preach the gospel to every creature. That command is given to all Christ's disciples.
What is one bit of wisdom you have for those who want to share the love of the Messiah with others?
Be a friend to those you wish to share the love of Christ with. Genuinely show that you care about them. Get to know them on a personal level. There is an old adage which says, "people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." I believe this to be true. Rightly or wrongly, if they don’t believe you care about them, they will not listen to you.
What Scripture compels you the most to do what you do?
In Acts 1:8, Jesus tells his disciples they will be His witnesses, in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. We are now His disciples as well, and we live in the uttermost parts of the earth. The isles afar off in the OT, or the distant coastlands, as it says in some versions. Even here, we have the awesome opportunity to be witnesses for Him.
What books have you read (other than the Bible) that have impacted your spiritual life most?
Anything by Lewis or Chesterton. While they are not evangelicals, they do teach a lot about the nature of God and the depravity of man. Anything as well by Billy Graham and Max Lucado. Billy Graham said that he wished he had read the Bible more, and other books less. Spurgeon wrote, "Visit many good books, but live in the Bible." As much as possible, I want to live in the Bible.
Who is the most influential person in your spiritual life?
Paul wrote to Timothy about the Great faith he found in his grandmother and mother, and how he was sure that faith would be found in Timothy as well. I also have had both a mother and grandmother of Great faith. Seeing their great trust in the Lord in the midst of obstacles in their own lives influenced my Christian walk more than any other.
